This course was introduced in 2008 to cater for people who live in outlying areas or in other countries where access to adult education is limited, or who simply don’t have the time to attend a course. Having said that, it is not a pre-requisite that the student lives miles away. We now have local students (5 km from the studio) who have chosen to study via correspondence through to students in Dubai, Iraq, Germany, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland.

(Personal note – I am not sure who is enjoying the course more, my students or me! I am so enjoying getting acquainted with gardens around the world and the beautiful images with which students are choosing to illustrate their various assignments.)

Who will benefit from this course?

Anyone in the gardening / landscaping / nursery industry who would like to improve his / her design skills.

Anyone wanting to learn how to design a garden from scratch;

Of real benefit to the student is that every aspect of the planning stage needs to be documented, for our mutual benefit. This ensures that there are no errors or omissions in the planning stage, which bodes well for an accurate, workable end-result.

Students around the world can learn how to effectively plan and design a garden for their specific region and climate, including effective plant research and use of plant material.

Course Content

The course material is attractively presented and practical to work through.

It is based on the Twelve-Week Garden Design course offered in the studio and covers the identical course material with the exception of garden maintenance. The text book, Making Sense of Garden Design (Sinvolle Tuinontwerp), co-authored by Lindsay Gray, is the official text book for this course. Although the course material is currently in English, it is in the process of being translated into Afrikaans and the Afrikaans textbook slots in well with the course material.

Lindsay Gray will tutor English and Afrikaans speaking students, while tutoring support will be offered to those whose mother tongue is isiZulu by one of the past students.

Testimonials

"I know that I am repeating myself but the joy and excitement that I am experiencing with this course is wonderful. I have just finished reading the module on plants and plant research and have done a lot of research so I am feeling confident enough to put a list of plants together, which I will send to you for approval."
Annieta Russell

"I chose your course because it sounds really hands-on. I really appreciate your feedback and personal involvement in helping me choose my intended project. I am really glad that I selected your course!"
Bronwyn Conlyn

"Jou kursus was die moeite werd en baie leersaam. Ek en Marie is egter nou geneig wanneer ons by huise verby loop om die tuine te kritiseer. Ons kyk altyd of daar beplanning is en of daar spesifieke fokuspunte is. 'n Mens kom nou agter hoe min mense beplan hulle tuine."
Eugene de Bruyn

"This garden design course was pretty much what I expected it to be. It was easy to follow and, when it came time to do my final project, I realy felt that I was well equipped. What I didn't expect was how much clever, simple logic is supplied in the form of garden principles. It's logic that one will probably never be able to pick up, nor define, by oneself no matter how much gardening you've done. One can really accomplish great things with a few simple principles. It's just like riding a bike."
Joanne Saulez

Baie, baie dankie. Uiteindelik kan ek nou my tuinmaak ook vervolmaak."
